2 dogs resuscitated, recovering after being pulled from Altoona fire that killed man

Officials say two dogs are recovering after being rescued from an Altoona house fire that claimed the life of a man.

City officials offered condolences to the family and friends of 75-year-old Mark Stuart whom they say unfortunately died of smoke inhalation from the fire.

The devastating fire happened Tuesday evening when flames broke out at a home at 118 E. 5th Ave.

As crews searched the home and made sure other occupants were out, the Altoona Fire Department removed two dogs from the first floor.

As the dogs laid on the porch, a paramedic trainee with AMED realized both of the animals were still alive.

“Both were in grave condition, suffering smoke inhalation and burns,” AMED wrote in a Facebook post.

Both dogs were taken to an ambulance where they were resuscitated and, after more than an hour of care, they began to recover.

Officials say both dogs were taken to Sylvan Veterinary Hospital where they were able to walk into the building.

Wednesday, the dogs were taken to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society where they continue to recover.

“Both of the dogs are safe, under continued veterinary care, fed, loved, warm,” the humane society said in a Facebook post. “They are both doing well and we will continue to update the community on their health.”

The dogs are not currently up for adoption and the shelter is asking the public not to call them about the animals.

Although they are not accepting adoption applications right now, they say you can help care for them by making a donation.
