Jo Koy’s original name is Joseph Glenn Herbert, and he was born on June 2, 1971 to an American father and Filipino mother. Jo Koy therefore has both European-American and Filipino ancestry. When I was growing up, Jo’s family moved around a lot. They went from the city of Spanaway, Washington to the city of Tacoma, also in Washington, eventually settling in Las Vegas.

For his high school education, Jo attended KoySpanaway Lake High School but finished at Foss High School in Tacoma. This frequent change of environment may have helped Jo to become a very diverse and open-minded person. He earned admission to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, but this young man gave up his college education to pursue stand-up comedy full-time.

Many questions have been asked about the idea behind his stage name “Jo Koy” and this talented comedian has explained that it was very easy to come up with this name as it originated from a nickname his family gave him during his childhood.

His mother’s name is Josie Harrison and she was born in 1948. She is a Filipino citizen from Quezon City. This hardworking and supportive mom has reportedly worked two jobs just to support her kids. Those two jobs were a banker at Wells Fargo and a hostess at a restaurant. Interestingly, her mother was an actress in her native country of the Philippines. Jo Koy often credits his mother for his success because her support gave him the impetus to continue his career as a comedian.

His father worked in the US Air Force. Unfortunately, Jo Koy was estranged from his father at a young age because his parents divorced when he was only 13 years old. He was not lacking in a fatherly figure in his life, however, as his mother soon remarried a postal worker who was a former US Army soldier.

Jo Koy has two sisters; Rowena Hebert and Gemma Herbert. He shares a close relationship with his siblings and has shared several pictures and videos of him having fun and having a good time with them. This is definitely a man who takes his family seriously.
