New Jersey Trout Season On The Horizon

More than 100,000 anglers are expected to take to the water across the state on opening weekend, said the The Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Officials with the division said they are stocking more than 570,000 rainbow trout across the state throughout the spring, with nearly 200,000 in the water and ready to be caught on opening day.

"Opening day of trout season is one of the most anticipated days on the calendar for anglers,” said David Chanda, director of the Division of Fish and Wildlife Director. “New Jersey offers some of the best trout fishing on the East Coast, and has one of the best trout stocking programs found anywhere.”

But before any fishing can happen, anglers age 16 or older must obtain a fishing license and trout stamp to fish for trout. Children under 16 and New Jersey residents 70 years and older may fish for free. Licenses and stamps may be obtained through license agents statewide or here

A new type of license is also available to anglers introducing a friend to freshwater fishing. The Fishing Buddy License offers both a current and a new angler (or two new anglers) reduced-price fishing licenses.

“Trout fishing in New Jersey is extremely popular, both for anglers to enjoy a relaxing day on the water and for families to spend time together,” said Rich Boornazian, Department of Environmental Protection assistant commissioner for Natural and Historic Resources. “This annual event is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate New Jersey’s outdoors, make great memories and catch fresh trout.”
