On Sunday, the top-seeded team capped an undefeated season by topping four-time defending champion Immaculate Heart for the NJSIAA/Wilson Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions title at William Paterson University on Sunday.
It was the first ToC title for Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan (26-0) since 2010.
“It was really a remarkable, remarkable year for us," coach Melissa Landeck said. "This is as far as we can go.”
Eight seniors will graduate this year. Five of them started on the varsity team when they were freshmen.
The team overcame injuries and a few bumps along the way.
“Teams played their best against us. They really pushed," Landeck said. "But [we] found ways to fight back and win.”
"It ended up being a biproduct of our hard work,” she added. “Having been down the road over the previous three years, they certainly had their sites set on winning those championships."
The team also took league, county and state championships this year.
“In any given season, you hope to play for any one or two of those titles," Landeck said.
