BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities say a Breezewood man is behind bars following an animal cruelty investigation in Bedford County in which two horses were reportedly shot and killed.
Police say in December, troopers were contacted after the two horses were found at a property along Menchtown Road, in East Providence Township.
Investigators say both of the animals, which were ponies, had been shot in the head and a third horse was found shot but alive.
Upon further investigation, police say a witness reported hearing a "loud" truck near the property on the night of the alleged shooting, although police say the witness did not recall hearing any gunshots.
Troopers say they then spoke to the owner of the horses, who suspected that 25-year-old Waylon Brennan could have been involved in the shooting.
Police say they later learned that prior to the shooting, an alleged acquaintance of Brennan had reportedly contacted the property owners and warned them to remove the horses from the pasture, stating that he "knew someone who wants to do something stupid."
Authorities say cellphone GPS data showed Brennan at the property at the time of the shooting.
Troopers say a co-worker also contacted police and reported overhearing Brennan talking about the dead horses.
According to online court records, Brennan was arraigned Wednesday on multiple counts of felony conspiracy to commit aggravated cruelty to animals.
He is being held at the Bedford County Jail on $300,000 bail.
