On May 4, the same day that the news broke that General Hospital had recast Lexi Ainsworth as Kristina with Days of Our Lives Emmy winner Kate Mansi, the former took to Instagram to discuss the switcheroo and what led up to it. “After 10 transformative years, both personally and for my character, I will be leaving,” said Ainsworth. “I was looking forward to this upcoming storyline because it was inspired by a personal experience of mine.
“But,” she added, “I am currently working on writing on my own story from my point of view, which has been thus far cathartic and hopefully [will be] inspiring to other women. So I look forward to sharing that with you guys when it is completed.”
As much as Ainsworth loves the soap, it is not where her ambitions end. “While General Hospital has remained a top priority, I have been interested in pursuing new career opportunities that align with my evolving interests and goals,” she admitted. “And I’m confident that this mutually beneficial decision will lead to new endeavors where I will continue to grow and expand my talents beyond the industry.
“But I do want to take a second to address the fans and express my deepest appreciation to you guys who have supported me over the years,” she continued. “Your loyalty has been a constant inspiration, and I am forever grateful. The show would not be what it is without you guys.”
Going forward, Ainsworth, who noted that she guest-stars in the Monday, May 22, episode of NCIS, plans to be the driver of her career, not a passenger. “As I leave General Hospital, I will continue carving out a space for myself where I am an active part of the creative process,” she said. “And as much as it is hard to say goodbye, I know that this has ultimately freed me for what I am meant to be pursuing.”
Ainsworth debuted in the role of Sonny and Alexis’ daughter in 2009. She was replaced in 2012 by future Walker star Lindsey Morgan, then came back in 2015. At that time, Kristina was plunged into a storyline that found her involved in a scandalous romance with her married college professor, Parker. Later, the character made the grave mistake of getting mixed up with the Dawn of Day cult.
While we wait to see how Mansi fares as Kristina, check out a photo gallery of soaps’ all-time best recasts — some of whom you probably won’t even remember were recasts.
