Season 3 of FBI: International is here, but the Fly Team is down an agent as Heida Reed, who stars as Special Agent Jamie Kellett, exited the show in the season premiere. Why did Jamie Kellett leave FBI: International and how was she written off? Keep reading to find out.
FBI: International is the third spin-off of Dick Wolf’s FBI. It follows the elite operatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s International Fly Team. Headquartered in Budapest, the team investigates crime and terrorism abroad, neutralizing threats against American citizens. Luke Kleintank stars Scott Forrester, the head of the Fly Team unit, while Reed starred as his second-in-command and on-again, off-again girlfriend. Rounding out the cast is Carter Redwood as Special Agent Andre Raines, Vinessa Vidotto as interrogation expert Cameron Vo and Season 3 newcomer Christina Wolfe as Special Agent Amanda Tate.
News broke in December 2023 that Reed was leaving the series early on in Season 3. The Season 2 finale ended on a major cliffhanger; an explosion went off in the Fly Team’s headquarters with a majority of the squad was still inside. The episode ended before viewers could learn who survived, but Reed’s exit certainly had fans nervous that Jamie wouldn’t make it.
Additionally, executive producer Matt Olmstead had warned in an interview with Parade that there was going to be a “major loss” in Season 3. “The explosion not only takes the building that houses the off-site office down but sends a huge ripple effect through the team. There ends up being a major injury—and a major loss,” he said.
Below, find all the details on Heida Reed’s departure, including what happened to Jamie Kellett.
Why did Jamie Kellett on FBI: International? Did she survive the explosion? Thankfully, Jamie survived the explosion, but she shocked her team not long after with the news that she was transferring to to the Washington, D.C. field office.
“I’m leaving this, the Fly Team,” she announced in the premiere. She explained that when her sister June took her own life, she made a promise to herself to “live my life for the both of us.” She continued, “I served my country, traveled, fell in love, I ran away from my grief … it’s time to go back home.”
While fans were holding out hope for Jamie and Scott reconciling, that wasn’t the case. The former couple, who broke up in Season 1, had one last sweet moment when Scott dropped Jamie off at the train station, but it was purely platonic. “Go easy on yourself, Scott,” Jamie told him as they hugged. “Not everything you carry needs to be carried.”
Why is Heida Reed leaving FBI: International? In December 2023, Deadline reported that Reed would be exiting FBI: International early on in Season 3. The outlet did not disclose when the Icelandic actress’ final episode will be at the time, but they did report that her departure was a creative decision.
News of Reed’s exit came shortly after Wolfe was cast as Amanda Tate. It’s very likely that the show did not need both actresses and Wolfe’s character will serve as a replacement for Jamie.
Reed reflected on her time on the show following the Season 3 premiere. She shared two behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, writing in the caption: “Thank you SO MUCH to the fans for letting Jamie into your hearts 💕 Agent Kellett out! ✈️ #fbiinternational.” Fans flooded the comments section with support, with one fan writing: “Won’t be the same FBI Fly team.” Another lamented, “Truly disappointed. We all loved your character. It really won’t be the same.”
FBI: International airs on CBS on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST and streams on Paramount+.
